ABOUT
D.Markis is a multifaceted singer songwriter. Born in Dallas, TX, he grew up in a house where artistry was pronounced in the craft of hair styling, of which D.Markis is a third generation industry member. But music was primary to his artistic upbringing, where Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Beverly, Rick James, Luther Vandross and Prince were the soundtrack to backyard barbecues and the famous Trinity Gospel Choir gave early vocal training.
D. Markis later moved to Seattle, WA, where he published his first book of poetry Moments of Love, a collection of reflections on his identity and relationships using a cadence reminiscent of a song you'd hear on a warm summer day. The expression of self in these poems seem to be a precursor to D.Markis' introspective lyrics and musical sound.
In his first release, Fantasy, an EP of 6 songs, the lyrics are accessible, but deeply personal. The title track opens with, "When I was just a little boy, I couldn't imagine what life could be, I was so young and free. Tryin' to get my life right, struggling with desires that I did not know what to do within." The vocals and music are warm and laid back, moving the listener gently through the complexities of D.Markis' experience growing up.
"Seazyns," D.Markis' first full length album, is equally personal, with stories told over a polished soulful palette. On the fourth track "Seasons," a meditation on love and loss evoked in the theme of nature, D.Markis sings, "Springtime, summer, winter fall, can I love you through it all?" The vocals dance with these words, creating a melody that is enchanting.
